My goodness. It’s staggering to think this iconic song was released 15 years ago. Fifteen freakin’ years?!
I can’t even remember what I was doing in 1997 but I do remember what an antidote this song was to all the Spice Girls bosh that was polluting the airwaves. Bitter Sweet Symphony was somehow real, while that other stuff was so obviously paint-by-the-numbers ‘music’. I’ll take real any day.
The irony about that, of course, is that The Verve got hooked up in some copyright issues with the Rolling Stones about elements of this very song. Is nothing authentic any more? (Don’t answer that.)
